Melissa Lockwood
I am a multimedia artist and design scientist. Recently, I have been researching and designing garment architecture solutions to lower temperatures in buildings. I love the way fabric looks beautiful and casts a cooling shadow. I will be testing ways to cool with fabric at Arcosanti.
My interest in garment architecture grew from both my first exposure to the concept with Paolo Soleri and then through my work on major installations affecting the architecture of museums in New York. The hands on immersive planning, fabrication and installations large architectural installations allows me to imaging large scale garment architecture solutions.
With Cosanti as Paolo’s original testing ground for garment architecture as seen in his Barrel Vault, I find Arcosanti the place to test new technologies that have developed. This will update and allow for new versions of garment architecture to emerge. Im hoping we can get these fabric covers on buildings lowering temperatures as an example for others to learn and use. I see Paolo’s method works and needs publicizing and employing.
Through my design science research I have developed ways to lower fashion industry waste. As seen on the United Nations website: https://sdgs.un.org/partnerships/melissa-lockwood.
I have taught sustainable fashion design, zero waste pattern making and creating with pattern area waste at Putney School and other workshops. My fashion design using pattern area waste has been featured in Vogue Magazine and shown internationally. My shows featured clothing made with fabrics mass producing fashion designers had thrown away. My work challenges and explains how the pattern waste can be made into additional clothing. Currently I my fashion design is focused on zero waste and up-cycling. Http://www.iqtest-nyc.com
I worked in the Guggenheim Museum’s fabrication department on major installations affecting the Architecture. Additionally, I created art objects, film sets and installed them internationally for Matthew Barney Studio. I worked on Special Projects for the Calder Foundation. Crozier Fine arts as an Art Handler and in the Engineering department.
